Telangana is a newly formed state bifurcated from the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh in June 2014. Telangana is bordered by the states of Maharashra to the north, Chhattisgarh to the east, Karnataka to the west, and Andhra Pradesh to the east and south. “A popular etymology derives the word "Telangana" from ‘Trilinga Desa’ (land of three lingas), a region so called because three important Saivite shrines were located here: Kaleshvaram, Srisailam and Draksharama. According to Jayadhir Thirumala Rao, a former director of Andhra Pradesh Oriental Manuscripts Library and Research Centre, the name Telangana is of Gondi origin. Rao asserts that it is derived from "Telangadh", which according to him, means "south" in Gondi and has been referred to in "Gond script dating back to about 2000 years". Divided in to 33 districts, Telangana mostly consists of hills, mountain ranges, and thick dense forests covering an area of 27,292kms.
