Bihar is one of the states trifurcated from West Bengal along with Orissa in the early twentieth century. It is one of the states credited with a good number of sacred spots relating to Brahmanical, Buddhist, and Jain religious sects. It is not wrong to presume that Bihar state, on the whole, is the most sacred one associating itself with the life of the Buddha and Mahavira and other religious activities. It is the origin pace of two important dynasties of India namely the Mauryas and the Guptas. Its present capital Patna was previously called Pataliputra which served as the capital of the above said dynasties. Of the sacred monuments of Bihar, two ancient spots are taken for the present study. They are Gaya and the Buddhha Gaya (Bodhgaya).
