This island has at area of 34 square miles (51.8 square km). It is situated in the Ramanathapuram district. Dhanuskodi, a part of this island, is referred to in ancient Tamil literary work, Agananuru as ‘Thonmudhukodi’. It was under the rule of the Sangam Panidyas, Kalabhras, Early Pandiyas, Cholas, Later Pandiyas, Madurai Sultans, Vijayanagara Nayak rulers, Setupatis and the British. Rameshvaram is well known for its significance of Murti (god), Thalam (the place) and tirtham (sacred water)
