The word ‘Museum’ derives its origin from the Greek root ‘mouseion’, which means a building sacred to the muses, namely the nine goddesses of the arts and sciences. The daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne (memory) they were born in Persia at the foot of Mount Olympus, their names being Clio (history), Euterpe (lyricpoetry), Thalia (comedy), Melpomene (tragedy), Polyhymnia (panegyric), Urania (astronomy), Calliope (epicpoetry), Terpsichore(choral dancing), and Erato (erotic poetry). A museum is an institution that acquires, preserves, displays and interprets an encyclopedic range of objects. Any accepted subject for study is represented in museums somewhere in the world.
