Cholavandan

Cholavandan is situated on the banks of river Vaigai on the ancient trade route leading from Madurai to Dindigul. It had its good old name as Pahanur. It seems to have been changed into a Brahmadeya (Brahmin settlement) after the name of the Early Pandya king, Parantaka Veeranarayana, as ParantakachaturvedhiMangalam. Then it was renamed as Cholantakachaturvethimangalam after the name of Cholanthalaikonda VeeraPandya, in the 10th century. There are Vatteluthu inscriptions of the 9th-10th centuries found in the temples of Cholavandan.
