Srilanka was originally known by various names including Sinhala,Thambhaparni, Taprobane (used by the Greeks), Elam (used by the native Tamils) and Lanka. Geographically Ceylon (SriLanka) is continuation of India. The plain of the north resembling that of South India and the mountains in the east of the island the western Ghats. At the time of the epic period, Ramayana and Mahabaratha, this island was called as Lanka and Lankapura. When the Portuguese came to this country they named it as Ceilao in CE 1505.
