146th Lecture On Mauryan Art And Architecture

Dr G Sethuraman Art Historian & Dr V Vedachalam Archaeologist

The Mauryan dynasty was founded by Chandragupta Maurya, who seems to have belonged to an ordinary family. The Brahmanical tradition says that he was born of a Shudra woman in the court of the Nandas. But, an earlier Buddhist tradition speaks of the Mauryas as the ruling clan of the little republic of Pipphalivana in the region of Gorakhpur near the Nepalese terai. Chandragupta was considered as a member of this clan.
