This 6 km long Ananamalai hill which looks like a sitting elephant welcomes all those who reach Madurai from the northern side about 10 km. It was called as
"Ivakundram" at the earlier period. "Ivam" means elepant. So it is called as Aanamalai (elepant hill). At the southern
side of this hill on the top there is Jain cave, of first century A.D. In front of this cave there is a inscription, pertaining to the
creator of this jain beds as "Eri Arithan Athuvayi Aratta kayiban". This hill also have 2 rock cut namely yoga narasimma temple and ladan temple.
